Zest 89, Glen Waverley

by Jenny @ Ichigo Shortcake on June 1, 2012

Kingsway in Glen Waverley isn’t just famous for their Asian influenced cuisines like I mentioned in Straits of Malacca, but also for its cafes. Amongst many good coffee joints and great breakfasts, there is Mocha Jo’s, Coco Lounge and Zest 89.

I actually visited Zest 89 some time ago late at night and we had wanted a coffee and dessert. The coffee was burnt, no coffee art was existent and the cake I got tasted like it was left out for a long time. I didn’t return again to Zest 89 until a few weeks ago. This time it was a lot more impressive.

The coffee was a lot better – it was fragrant, creamy and strong. This cappuccino hit all the right spots that day as I was in dire need of a good caffeine hit. Although still not exactly strong on the coffee art side, it was more than enough to keep me happy.

Yuye was being strange and decided to order a sweet dish (I know right?) for lunch. He ordered the berry waffles ($14.50) which came with vanilla ice cream, berry compote and waffles. It arrived so majestic I thought someone was going to give me a crown. It stood so high and mighty that I didn’t know where to start digging in. I think I did well choosing the berry version instead of the chocolate.

The waffles were average by themselves, a little hard and obviously cold (being stacked under a whole lot of ice cream and cold fruits doesn’t help) but together with the berries and ice cream, it was heavenly. It wasn’t overly sweet as the acidity from the berries contrasted very nicely with the sweet ice cream and waffles but was sweet enough to satisfy our (or mine rather) sweet cravings. I’ve always liked pancakes more than waffles for obvious reasons – pancakes are fluffy and warm – but waffles are not bad every now and then.

After much agonising over what to order myself, I settled for the Flatout ($16.90) which consisted of a H.U.G.E omelette with a equally HUGE piece of bread. It was filled with so much mushrooms, red capsicum, ham and cheese that we were really flat out after the meal, literally.

It looked rather like a big pizza when I unfolded it. The bread was soft and tasty. I wonder which bakery they bought this from…I can do with a loaf of this instead of the usual white bread.

We literally left a third of the dish unfinished which was such a shame. We lost to the eggs. I wonder how many eggs really went into that omelette…the waitress told us that take away is not available for health reasons and so we had to sadly leave the eggs (and heart attacks) behind.

I would have rather liked an option for a smaller omelette at a slightly cheaper price, because I hate wasting food which means the size of this dish deters me from ordering it again, or if I do order it again, I’ll have to order it to share.

Of course there are better cafes around Melbourne, but it’s a nice place to chill and relax on a sunny afternoon if you’re in the neighbourhood.

Question time: Would the size of the dish (being too big) deter you from ordering it, if prices isn’t an issue?

I’m totally in love with these cafes at the moment…especially the rustic looking ones..although this cafe’s not rustic, their food is quite nice. :)

I’m always furious when the dish sizes are too big (although it happens rarely in Switzerland), because I hate leaving them and apart from pizza and cheap fast-food restaurants doggie bags are not really done in Europe. On the other hand there is nothing worse than having a full meal and being still hungry afterwards (it happens in fancy restaurants).
My favourite pizza for example is the only one I can always finish and not feel guilty or sick afterwards. Accidentally this is also the best pizza in my city :-)

Good to hear that you have such a pizza place! It’s a usual occurrence for me to leave a restaurant utterly and totally full and feel like I’m going to explode..I tend to order a bit too much…although I’m surprised I haven’t really had the problem of not being able to take something away, apart from this time…it breaks my heart to see food go to waste! :(

I’m not a fan of stacked food (too hard to eat!), but the waffles do look pretty. Such a shame they were cold though!

I don’t really like it either actually, it just looks pretty but makes it messy and hard to eat, not to mention all the things at the bottom will be soggy.

I know, I was pretty impressed with the dish when it came, I wasn’t expecting it to be stacked like that. Although I did think it was a bit harder to eat and made the waffles a bit soggy…but I was still impressed. :)

I’ve visited Zest 89 before and didn’t think it was that bad and those waffles look great ~ but gosh that omelet is huge! I still find it silly how you’re not allowed to take it away sigh :) Nice to know I can go there for breakfast too hehe

Looks so delicious. That’s shame that they made it so huge that (maybe most) people can’t finish and they go to waste? I agree with you. Hope they will change to reduces on size…. it’s better they make us crave for it because serving is just right. :-) I miss visiting breakfast places!
