Product review: Tovolo sphere ice moulds & Laphroaig whisky

by Jenny @ Ichigo Shortcake on August 11, 2012

Even though I don’t really like drinking alcohol since I have a reasonably serious case of the Asian flush, I still enjoy seeing drinks being made and the occasional sips of something that looks delicious. Therefore I’m glad that Yuye likes to collect spirits, whiskeys and anything alcohol related, including bar utensils. When we eventually buy our own house, I’m going to try install a bar where we can store all these lovely (and often expensive) bar items.

Our most recent purchase was unexpected. I walked into Wheel & Barrow in Chadstone purely out of interest as the glass cake stands caught my attention while on our way to buy awesome gruyere cheese from Simon Johnson directly opposite. I walked out with this awesome set of sphere ice moulds (I should really stop calling these ice cube moulds…). These Tovolo ice moulds can make two 2.5″ spheres which are huge balls of ice!

The best thing about these ice spheres is the large size and thus less surface area for melting, making them last longer and won’t dilute your drink as much. They are also very fun to play with – when I made a drink with one I couldn’t stop rolling them around the glass….yes ok I know I’m childish but you’ll know what I mean if you get one!

For just under $20, I thought it was a great buy for something that will provide a lot of entertainment.

I first poured a soft drink on the ice but decided to go for a whiskey as well. Much to my dismay, even though the Whiskey was a great one (Laphroaig Single Malt Scotch Whisky – 10 years), I didn’t quite enjoy it as much. It was way too strong for my liking and the smokiness left a lingering taste in my mouth. I much prefer my mixed drinks or non-alcoholic drinks. I have much to learn yet.

The Laphroaig, made on the Island of Islay (the fifth largest Scottish island), has won many international whisky and spirits awards. I loved the idea of them giving away a little piece of their land – yes literally – to each bottle owner. By registering on their site with the unique purchase number found in each bottle, you’ll be given a (very small but unique) plot of land, and if you ever do visit the distillery on your travels to Scotland, you’ll surely be taken to that land that you alone own! How exciting. It definitely makes me want to visit there someday. :D

Even though I don’t like whiskies in general, I do know the Laphroaig 10 Years has everything that a great whisky needs – nuttiness, smokiness, that deep oaky taste and smell that I’m sure many find irresistible.

The Tovolo sphere ice moulds are available for purchase from the Wheel & Barrow online website for the same price plus $12.95 shipping fee if you’re interested or you can purchase from Amazon for $12.75USD plus shipping.

Question time: Do you like drinking whiskies? Have you tried the Laphroaig brand or do you own a bottle? If you do, maybe we could be neighbours in Islay. :P

Very cute isn’t it? It would make a great gift for people who like to make their own cocktails. :)

How freaking cool are those!? We don’t really drink either but I reckon we could have alot of fun with these. I’m so jealous you have fun kitchen shops that you can shop at. There are pretty much zero here, and the few that are in Cayman are CRAZY expensive.

I had heaps of fun with these if you couldn’t tell…hahaha…I’m such a little kid. It’s a lot more fun than the regular ice cubes, but be warned that the glass fits a LOT less drink…:P Maybe you can find some cheap ones online if you can’t find these in homeware stores?

I love Wheel and Barrow. It’s a great place to browse as there’s always something new I absolutely must have. I haven’t seen these ice molds but they would be great for keeping drinks cold on hot summer’s days xx

I love Wheel and Barrow as well, but sometimes the things I want are just so expensive! I hardly ever leave without anything though…:P

Cute ice molds – seems to take up a whole lot of space in the freezer just for an ice-cube though :D

Tell me about it! haha but I guess it’s worth it when you feel like a cold drink without having it diluted…It would never fit in my parents’ freezer though since it’s always full to the brim..
