Two Birds One Stone, South Yarra

Two Birds One Stone is situated off busy Toorak Road in South Yarra. It’s the sister cafe of Top Paddock which I adore and although I see many similarities like certain decor features, the feel of the two cafes were actually quite different.

Two Birds One Stone is not all that big, but of course the line outside can be just as long. Thankfully we arrived fairly late in the day after the rush was over so there happened to be a table free.

Coffees here are from Five Senses and like Top Paddock were smooth and strong with a creamy cocoa finish. I loved the coffee art all.

Yuye decided to order a special of the day which was an oat crumbed colcannon served with beetroot cured ocean trout, two poached eggs and a sorrel verde ($18.50). We were impressed with how vibrant the dish was and definitely enjoyed the cured salmon. Colcannon is a traditional Irish dish consisting of mashed potato mixed with a veggie like cabbage or kale. Two Birds One Stone’s version is covered in crunchy oats which gave it a nice texture while retaining the soft creaminess inside. The only downside of this dish was the sorrel verde I thought. Perhaps I’m just not used to the taste but the verde tasted very grassy and overpowering compared to the rest of the dish.

I ordered the leek and potato rosti with house smoked salmon, soft herb salad, pickled cucumber and a poached egg ($18.50). When the dish came out, we realised that we had ordered 2 very similar dishes, but it didn’t affect how much we enjoyed them. My salmon was well made, with just the right amount of smokiness. The rosti was crunchy and not soggy at all and of course the egg was perfectly poached. My dish was quite fresh and easy to eat as well.

Overall it was a great meal with good service, good food and good coffee. Although it didn’t give me the wow factor as Top Paddock did, Two Birds One Stone is still a great breakfast/brunch and coffee destination when you’re nearby.

After the meal, you can stroll next door to Adriano Zumbo Patissier for a macaron or cake to finish a great afternoon.
