Huxtaburger, Collingwood – such succulent beef patties!

by Jenny @ Ichigo Shortcake on June 13, 2012

I’ve been having a lot of burgers lately, and good ones too. A week ago I was at Andrew’s Hamburgers which was a fantastic experience and just 3 days ago I went to Huxtaburger. Having the wonderful burgers at Andrew’s left a little burger craving so when my friends asked me to dine at Huxtaburger, I was overjoyed.

The weather was trying to pull me away from a good meal but I was determined to enjoy myself. We arrived just after 12:30pm on Saturday but then my friend Rachel called and said there’s really no space to sit at Huxtaburger. I didn’t even think about that when I got all excited about the meal! We were meant to meet up with 10 people and obviously there wasn’t space (at least not out of the rain outside) where we could enjoy the burgers. As a result, it was unanimously decided that lunch will be changed to Little Creatures Dining Hall.

I was ecstatic about Little Creatures because I hadn’t yet been, but I really wanted to taste those fantastic looking burgers! I mean one of the choices had beetroot in it. I just had to. So, I got a burger takeaway and consumed it (with the help of Yuye) in the car on the way to Little Creatures. Crazy person I am right? But I don’t regret what I did. It was that good.

There were not many choices upon closer inspection of the menu, in fact, there’s only 5 types and all are variations of the basic Huxtaburger which contains beef patty, mustard, mayo, tomato sauce, tomato, cheese, lettuce and pickles (this burger only costs $8). I ordered the Bills which added bacon, egg, pineapple and beetroot for a total of $10.

While I waited for my burger (which actually took a while because of the queue) I gawked at all the burgers at the counter being assembled and served. I was getting hungry. I love it when waiters/chefs at a restaurant smile and pose for photos, even though (I’m so sorry!!) I wasn’t actually focused on them. Aww…I need to be better prepared for these things.

I also ordered a small chips ($2.50) on the side with my burger. A burger’s not complete without chips, although I actually only ate 1 or 2 out of the bucket. I was trying to conserve stomach space for a second lunch at Little Creatures so my friends ate the rest. From what I had, it was just regular (although fairly good) chips that was crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. You get the choice of crinkle cut or chipotle fries but the crinkle cut came as default.

The burger sounded and looked just like a regular gourmet burger, but the secret lies in that succulent beef patty. It was the hero of the burger and was what brought all the other ingredients together.

Yuye thought that it may have been on the slightly salty side which means some people, who are not huge fans of salt, might not like it as much but I love salt. Let me correct that, I love tasty things and that burger was perfectly seasoned and spiced to provide me with maximum enjoyment so it’s not too salty in my opinion. Not at all. It was simply delicious.

There was no space to take photos of the burger and chips in the restaurant so we hid in a doorway next door to escape the rain while I snapped away. The one thing I didn’t quite like about the place (which is not there fault by any means) is the difficulty of eating the burger on the go. The beetroot juices was literally everywhere and I had to cover it with as many tissues as I could find in the car. It was chaos! Next time, I will come to Huxtaburger with less people and actually try to sit down and enjoy the meal properly.

Question time: Have you ever had 2 lunches just because you couldn’t help yourself?

Whoa, that burger is HUGE!! Can totally understand why you would have trouble eating it without making a mess! I think I would need cutlery :P Hope to try it one day!

I can’t remember ever having two lunches but maybe lunch quickly followed by afternoon tea hehe

It wasn’t as big as it looks I think, although by no means small…it was the beetroot juice that kept dribbling down the side! I’m terrible at eating on the run, need to sit down definitely. :P

Oh huxtaburger <3 Shame you couldn't have it sitting down, the freshly toasted and buttered brioche bun is to die for! Love the photos, especially of the happy chef!

I love that happy chef photo! I was too embarrassed to ask him to pose again, but I guess for a blurry photo of him it wasn’t too bad. :P

It’s not actually as big as it looks, but it was very full of flavour and there were quite a few ingredients in there. :)

I know it looked amazing! It was a bit smaller (according to my boyfriend) than the Might Melbourne from Grill’d but it was so good and the prices are definitely quite good. Should try it. :)

Haha, someone said it above, but damn that burger is big :D . I gotta say, it upsets me if I can’t fit a burger in my mouth. I always think it’s such a shame if I have to really crush it and smoosh it down just to fit it between my chompers. Looks tasty though, despite it’s enormity! :D Beetroot in a burger eh…? I wonder how it is!

Haha I just get annoyed that the juices are going everywhere if I can’t fit it in my mouth. :P You’ve never tried beetroot in a burger? It’s the BEST! My favourite. :)

What a small world, Jenny! Hope you don’t mind the picture of you and your friends up on my blog :)
Also, you’re not by any chance planning on going up to Queensland this weekend…are you? I truly hope you’re not, because then our overlaps would start getting weird…lol! :P
