There’s nothing like waking up to the aromatic smell of freshly brewed and ground coffee. But since I don’t have a coffee roaster in my home (nor do I even have a coffee machine), the next best thing is to have breakfast at a coffee brewer plus cafe.
My friends and I dined at Coffeehead in Camberwell a couple of weeks ago and I thought it was great. The cafe is very big. It looked like a warehouse turned cafe/restaurant like many other cafes around Melbourne but the distinct different is the whiff of coffee aroma that hit me in the face and entered my nose as soon as I set foot in the door.
What gave us that aromatic hit was the coffee roasting machines at the back. It’s not closed in by doors or windows so the fantastic smells can free flow around the room all the way to the front door.
There was a whole table laid out with different magazines which is a great way to keep people sitting around and order extra coffees.
After a quick dash around the room, I found my friends already seated in the back corner. It wasn’t the brightest table there was but it was more quiet.
We ordered a coffee each. I ordered a cappuccino while Yuye ordered a latte. The cappuccino came out first and we all looked at it in awe. I didn’t quite know what it was meant to be at first but then it hit me. IT was a swan! Or at least I think it was a swan. Yuye’s latte art was absolutely beautiful. This is the type of coffees that make me want to go do a barista course.
We all thought the coffees were great. They were aromatic, tasty and just the right bitterness.
As soon as I saw the baked eggs (huevos rancheros: baked eggs w jamon, capsicum & tomato ragout ! ! served w sourdough toast
for $15) on the menu, I was sure of my choice. As you might already know if you’ve been reading my blog lately, baked eggs has been on the menu at home and in restaurants. I just can’t get enough of that beautiful pots of tomatoey and eggy goodness! Coffeehead’s version had a lot of capsicums in it but it was still delicious. The bread was great to soak up the sauces and was fragrant and fluffy.
The pomegranate cured ocean trout, served on herb blinis w poached eggs and pomegranate sauce ($16) was (in my opinion) not as good as the baked eggs. Yuye and my friends all ordered this dish. Although Yuye thought the ocean trout was cured to perfectly and seasoned very well, I thought the blini wasn’t all that great. It was a bit too heavy and floury for my liking. It would have gone down better with a big piece of bread like mine. The poached eggs were done very well though and we did still like the dish.
Overall, it was a very good meal. Coffeehead has that old school vibe that made me feel comfortable and at home. I’d happily sit there with a coffee (or many coffees) and a magazine to read all day. I especially loved the coffee smells that constantly tempted me throughout the whole meal and I left still with coffee cravings! Although the trout dish wasn’t as good as I would have liked, there were still elements there that were commendable. I would return just for the cute latte art and beautiful coffee though.
If you’re worried about parking in that busy Camberwell area, not to worry. Coffeehead has its own parking just at the entrance of the shop which is a great convenience.

Oh man… I miss having breakfast outside. I really do, as much as eating at a course meal at a fancy restaurant. We buy good coffee and brew at home, but you know once in a while I want it to be served by someone else besides me. It’s such a luxury to spend nice weekend morning at cafe like this… and back then I wasn’t ware that I’d miss it!
I think you should be able to bring your kids along to a breakfast out once in a while!
I’ve seen plenty of people who do it here and the kids get to enjoy a small meal as well. 
But definitely being served by others once in a while is good, although I’d love to be able to make my own coffee at home…need to get a machine!
The aroma of roasted coffee is irresistible! We actually drink more tea than coffee (although my wife loves it, she’s allergic to it! how awful!), but I get my share of coffee, too. The baked egg dish looks so delish.
Aww it’s a shame your wife is allergic! I tend to drink more tea at home and coffees when I’m out, wish I can buy a good coffee machine for home too, although we don’t really need it since Melbourne has such an abundance of good coffee places.

Yeah, I agree…it’s such bliss that we have so many good coffee places around Melbourne…spoilt for choice, but the best ones are keepers.
Mmm I find coffee to be utterly heavenly. And when delicious food is served with it…even better!

Is it just me, or does the place almost look a bit american-retro? Loving the look of the baked eggs, as well as the cured ocean trout; fish for brunch seems to be my thing recently ^^
Yes! That’s the word I was trying to find…it does look a bit American doesn’t it…was pretty interesting to walk around and look at all the decorations.
Fish and eggs for brunch has always been my thing. 
But I think baked eggs seems to be more my thing these days. 
I remember visiting and it was so lovely! I liked how they really dressed up the place and gave it that American diner feel hehe
I really liked their coffee and kinda happy that they’re closer to our side and not so far away in the city and stuff hehe
Yes definitely good to have a good coffee place closer to home.
