The Foodrinkery, Burwood

As weird as it seems for those of you who don’t know me in real life, I used to be and still am quite an introvert. But I wasn’t always like this as a child. When I still lived in Shanghai, all the grown ups loved my sweet mouth and apparently talented way of getting on people’s good sides and I was very good at making friends. After arriving in Australia, a land where the language barriers kept me away from others, my introverted ways started to develop. It became so bad that I even refused to ask for directions or buying anything in shops.

I was quite a worrying child for my parents but somehow my brother was the most extroverted person I know. Sometimes I wonder if we’re actually related.

It wasn’t until university and its countless presentations as well as job interviews that I started to exit my lonely shell and I’m so glad I did. Meeting new people is such a wonderful feeling, especially those who you just click with. Meeting fellow bloggers is an even more amazing experience I’m sure all of you bloggers will understand.

I met up with Daisy from Never Too Sweet not too long ago for brunch. She was the most talkative and bubbly person and it was so nice to chat to her for almost 2 hours straight. I can sense we have a lot in common. If you’ve never been to her blog, hop over and gawk at all her baked goods that always make me salivate.

The cafe we went to was close to the both of us called The Fooddrinkery in Burwood. It’s a small and clean cafe set in quiet suburbia. I’ve gotten so used to drinking coffee and eating brunch in inner city that I’ve forgotten just how nice it is to have the same thing in a tree lined street, birds chirping outside and no problem whatsoever with parking.

I ordered a latte as usual and it came with beautiful coffee art in an equally gorgeous coffee cup. The coffee itself was very smooth and aromatic, signs that the barista knows what he’s doing. It was also the perfect temperature for drinking, hot but not too hot.

Daisy ordered a mocha which I didn’t get a chance to try but it looked inviting.

Although the menu isn’t huge, we still had a bit of trouble choosing what we wanted to eat. I finally settled on the Croque Madame for $9 and it was just delicious. It consisted of ham, swiss cheese, mustard, becamel and a poached egg on top. Essentially a dressed up ham and cheese toasted sandwich, as soon as you cut into it, the gooey cheese oozed out. All the ingredients went harmoniously together as you can imagine.

It doesn’t look like a big dish but it was surprisingly very filling and I couldn’t finish my last bite which was a shame.

Daisy ordered the whipped avocado and ricotta on sourdough and poached egg ($10). It was a very healthy dish and while I liked the creamy textures of the avocado and ricotta, I wasn’t too sure it was my kind of dish. I preferred my ham and cheese toasty more although it was no where near as healthy.

While I was stuffed to my neck already, Daisy decided to order ‘dessert’, I don’t know how she could fit so in much sweet things ;). Tossing between a brownie and the lemon cheesecake milkshake ($6), her sweet tooth was won over by the milkshake as would I. Upon tasting it, it reminded both of us of a familiar taste. I couldn’t quite pinpoint what it was but Daisy said it might be some form of an icy pole. Whatever it was, it was quite creamy and definitely lemon cheesecakey. If that’s even a word!

The Foodrinkery is right opposite a primary school and next to a park with a playground. When we arrived, there were many mothers with their children playing there so I can imagine it would be a popular hangout spot for parents with kids and prams. If you want to avoid the crowd, perhaps go between school drop off and pickup times.

I thoroughly enjoyed my meeting with Daisy as I did the food and great coffee. The Foodrinkery is a welcomed addition to that part of town where good cafes are a rare breed. I will be back again for sure.

So lovely that you were able to meet up with another blogger! I think about that often and wish that there wasn’t such a distance between so many of us. Your photos are lovely… and are making me hungry!

Ham and Cheese Toasties are the best – I should make more of those.

Burwood is out of my way though, so I doubt I’ll get to try this version :(

My husband was raised in Burwood so we have a fondness for it. :) You’ve never come across as introverted so maybe it’s only your perception.
