Gelato Messina, Fitzroy

As the weather is getting warmer, ice cream has been high on my crave list. My freezer is now full to the brim with different flavours – I should really limit myself on how much I’m allowed to eat….

I’m sure that’s the case with everyone at the moment since every time I pass Gelato Messina or N2, there’s a long line outside. The first warm day after winter was quite an amazing sight. Thankfully Yuye was able to line up before I arrived, it apparently took about 20 minutes or more to get to the front of the line.

Gelato Messina is one of my favourite ice cream destinations because of their creative flavours and for the beautifully smooth consistency. They started out in Sydney and after being a huge hit, decided to share a little bit of that indulgence with us Melbournians. I’m very glad they did.

On this particular occasion, we decided to order a three flavoured tub, just because we can. It’s only $10 for the tub and it’s huge! The flavours we picked were tiramisu, the gianduia bianca and the dulce de leche. The tiramisu was my favourite and is made with egg, Marsala wine, mascarpone and lady finger biscuits just like a real tiramisu. It had chunky pieces of coffee soaked lady finger biscuits which was totally delicious.

The gianduia bianca is white choclate and hazelnut gelato with hazelnut praline. Some praline pieces were huge but added a good crunch to the smooth nutty gelato. Dulce de leche is an Argentinean caramel made by reducing milk until it becomes a sweet jam so you can imagine it tasted somewhat like caramel, a very good one at that.

I’ve tried various other flavours such as the Steve Jobs (and the tiramisu again) on a different occasion with caramelised white chocolate and macadamia gelato with macadamia crunch and then the Jack Daniels and smoked chocolate gelato amongst various others and were all impressive. I can’t wait to try their new flavours! If you haven’t been yet, you’re definitely missing out.
