I love crepes. I think many people would share my love for this French thin pancake which can be eaten sweet or savoury.
When you talk about crepes in Melbourne, I think not many people would have heard of the name Breizoz, at least I haven’t until recently when I was looking for somewhere to sit down while I waited for friends. Situated at the corner of Brunswick Street and Gertrude Street, somewhat hidden from view, many walking past might think it’s just a regular cafe but in actual fact it’s a cute little cafe that makes one of the best tasting crepes.
The staff here are very friendly and even asked if I wanted to step into the kitchen to watch them make the crepes.
The crepes here are simple but delicious. The outside looks plain but what’s inside was a surprise.
Yuye ordered the banana beurre caramel creme (butter caramel) – $12. The banana puree was delicious smooth and sweet and mixed very well with the caramel. The crepe was thin and crisp and lightly sweetened.
There are many options and each sounded good but I wanted something unique. After some thought, I settled on the apple Calvados crepe ($12). The Calvados is an apple brandy from the French region of Lower Normandy so being a brandy made from apples, it naturally paired very well with the apple crepe.
The crepe came on fire just like a crepe suzette. It was quite a scene to see and although the flame burnt some of the alcohol, it was still quite strong and very delicious. Overall it was a great dish.
I also ordered a latte to go with my crepes and was surprisingly strong and aromatic. I’ve found cafes like these don’t focus much on their coffees so often come bitter and milk is often not frothed well. The coffee came with a small cinnamon meringue.
Although we didn’t spend very long at Breizoz, we fully enjoyed the warm hospitality and atmopshere, even better that the crepes were fantastic! 😉
